Abstract
Objective: Present study was conducted for survey of hand washing activity before and after dental practice among dentists and dental staff at dental hospitals in Korea.

Methods: The survey was done at 168 dental hospitals in Korea on the period of December 14, 2010 to January 31, 2011. We collected data by e-mail, and received 121 replies, resulting in a response rate of 72%. ANOVA test was conducted using SAS.

Results: Hand washing activity of dental personnels in 121 dental hospitals was greater than 71%, pre-practice hand washing was 67.50% and post-practice hand washing was 80.17%. There was no significant difference between hospital characters and hand washing activity among dentists and dental staff. However, relationship between time for infection control activity and post-practice hand washing of dental personnels showed positive correlation(p<0.05). Glove change was related with pre- and post-practice hand washing in both dentists and dental staff, mask change was related with hand washing in dental staff, and surface infection control for dental appliances was related post-practice hand washing in dental staff(p<0.05).

Conclusions: Hand washing activity among dentists and dental staff in dental hospitals in Korea was relatively positive. However, there is more need to encourage and educate dental professionals to know the importance of hand washing during dental practice.
